Manufacturer Adds Farm Camp Scholarships to its ‘Bridges to Better Health’Wellness Program
PORTLAND, Ore. – August 5, 2015 – Starting this month, all new employees of Bridgetown Natural Foods will begin their company orientation on the farm next door. While learning the protocol for mixing, baking and packaging organic granolas and snacks for the natural foods industry is a priority, Bridgetown co-owners Dan and Kelly Klock want every employee to immediately gain access to Zenger Farm and its new Urban Grange, and to see it as an integral part of the company’s wellness program, “Bridges to Better Health.”
“Our team’s well-being is impacted by many things, including a sense of community and wholesome food,” said Kelly. “Zenger Farm and the Urban Grange are community anchors focused on food access. We’re proud to support this new resource and make it an extension of how we take care of our employees and their families.”
Bridgetown’s 130,000-square foot manufacturing facility is located in an underserved region of southeast Portland, an area that is also home to many of the company’s 250 employees. In 2012, Bridgetown formalized its partnership with the nonprofit Zenger Farm – a 16-acre working farm and wetland located next door – as a way to connect to the community, sustain an important neighborhood hub, and to give its employees access to nourishing, locally grown foods.
Company Offers Employees’ Kids Farm Camp Scholarships
Starting in 2016, Bridgetown is supplementing its “Bridges to Better Health” wellness program with scholarships to Zenger Farm Camps. Each year, four children of employees will be awarded a tuition-free week of Spring or Summer Camp on the farm, offering exposure to experiential, science-based learning about agriculture and wetlands conservation. Through the company’s wellness program, all employees are offered free workshops and cooking classes focused on meal planning. Topics include using seasonal ingredients, healthy shopping and meal planning on a budget. Most sessions take place in the company’s test kitchen, and employees are paid their wages while in attendance. Participants in the workshops receive “Bridgetown Dough” —tokens they can use to buy fresh produce from Zenger Farm or at an in-house farm stand that Bridgetown stages in their employee lunch room every month.
